James Tavernier in heartfelt Rangers tribute to Jermain Defoe as captain bids farewell to 'second to none' striker

Rangers captain James Tavernier has paid fulsome tribute to Jermain Defoe after the veteran's Ibrox exit was confirmed.

The former England international joined the Premiership champions three years ago, scoring 32 goals in 74 appearances.

The striker moved into a player-coach role this season and made just two appearances before Steven Gerrard departed for Aston Villa.

With the arrival of Gio van Bronckhorst there was speculation that the 39-year-old would move on and his departure was confirmed on Wednesday.

And while he may not have done much on the pitch this term, his influence away from the public glare was hailed by Tavernier.

The skipper wrote on Instagram: "The word 'legend' is often overused. In this case, it sums up how to describe Jermain Defoe.

"His contribution on the field was immense, but his influence round the squad and training centre was outstanding. His positivity and professionalism has been second to none.
