James Tavernier flashpoint in Aberdeen vs Rangers clash as Ibrox skipper targeted with 'pie' for SECOND time

Rangers captain James Tavernier was targeted by a flying object, lobbed from the Pittodrie stand as Aberdeen fans let off pyro in a manic opening five minutes of the Premiership clash.

The right-back could be clearly seen on television being hit by what appeared to be a pie after only three minutes.

TV pictures show the full-back taking a throw-in as the object hits his lower back, disintegrating on impact.

It is the second time the Englishman has been seen ducking the Scottish football staple after he was targeted for similar treatment by Motherwell fans in April. On that occasion he was also targeted with a lighter.

Sky TV pictures were also partially obscured by thick red smoke billowing from the home section of the stands for around 30 seconds of the match.

The two sides have maintained an, at times poisonous, rivalry since they competed for titles and cups during the 1980s.

Tensions have been heightened after SEVEN meetings between the two sides last season with the Dons knocking out the Ibrox men from both cups.

Steven Gerrard's men put five past the Dons without reply at Ibrox earlier this season making Derek McInnes' men desperate to make amends tonight on their home patch.
