James Tavernier fires Rangers 'focus' warning as he follows lead of Steven Gerrard after Celtic win

Rangers captain James Tavernier has urged his team-mates to remain focused on the job in hand and not let the win against Celtic go to their heads.

The Ibrox skipper has been part of Rangers teams in the last two seasons that beat Celtic and then failed to capitalise on it in the following weeks.

And he's followed the lead of manager Steven Gerrard who urged his squad to remain 'humble' following the 2-0 win.

Tavernier was in fine form as he led his side to success at Celtic Park, but it's silverware at the end of the season he wants and he insists that's where all the focus needs to be.

He said: “We need to be consistent this year and we can’t afford to have any speedbumps in the way.

"We are learning our lessons from previous seasons. It is the start of the season. This game doesn’t decide when it comes to next May.

“It is a good performance and win, but it is just the start of where we need to be.

“We went there, stuck to what we needed to do, and got the three points. Now we just need to keep our heads down, work hard and stay focused.

“I am delighted. We can enjoy it and let the fans enjoy it and we will look forward to Thursday now.”
