James Scott admits regret at Celtic Park goal and admits he didn't know what to do

Motherwell striker James Scott has broken his silence over the controversial goal which sparked outrage at Celtic Park.

The Well youngster was public enemy No.1 for the Hoops players and support after setting up Gboly Ariyibi to end Celtic 's long run of clean sheets in February.

Scott latched on to a throw-in and played on after his side had tried to return the ball to the Hoops after it had been put out for Ryan Christie to receive treatment.

The 18-year-old raced down the flank before firing in a shot which was blocked only for Ariyibi to knock home the rebound.

That strike brought the game back to 2-1 before the Hoops went on to secure a 4-1 victory. However the circumstances surrounding the goal sparked a furious reaction as Kieran Tierney and his team-mates pointed the finger at the shocked Motherwell teen.

It also ended a run of eight successive domestic clean sheets for Scott Bain.

Now Scott has revealed how the mayhem ruined his first Premiership start for his club.

"If I could go back and change it then obviously I would," he told BBC Scotland.

"It was my first start, it was Parkhead. You couldn't get a better start than that. All the excitement is running through your head and then it happened.

"I thought, 'I don't know what to do here' because I was shocked. I keep telling myself, 'It's just one of these things' but I just try and shut it out."

Then Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers later hit out at Scott and claimed the teenager had "no excuses". And Scott admits he had to turn his phone off for a few days after the controversy.

He continued: "I didn't really know but it's just a minor fault in my career. You can't do anything about it. It's in the past and I hate talking about it.

"When we scored I looked back and they've all started chasing me. It's all died down now, although whenever anyone mentions it I just say 'can you whisper?'."
