New Rangers signing James Sands doesn't want to be pigeonholed into any one position - because playing in two doubles his chances of first-team action.
USA star Sands became Gio van Bronckhorst 's first signing on Wednesday as he arrived on an 18-month loan deal from New York City.
Rangers have an "exclusive" option to buy should the loan go to plan and it looks to be an astute piece of business from the Premiership leaders.
Sands ' ability to play in defence or in midfield is central to his appeal, especially with Rangers now short of options at centre-back, right-back and in midfield.
21-year-old Sands has starred for NYC both at centre-back and in the middle of the park while he has also played on the right of a back-four in the past.
And speaking on the NYCFC YouTube channel last year, Sands insisted he doesn't have a preferred position.
He'd much rather keep his options open and let his manager decide for himself where he best fits in.
Sands said: "Everyone always asks me what's my favourite (position). I'm always so hesitant to answer that because if I say one, maybe the coaches won't want to play me there.
"That's always why I'm a little bit hesitant to answer that question.
"Being able to play both has helped me so much as a young player because it just gets me on the field more.
"The biggest thing for young players is getting game time. Playing two positions just gives me double the chance of getting on the field.
"Maybe in the future I'd like to solidify one but for now I'm happy doing both."
