James Rodriguez lined up for 'bombshell' transfer ahead of Real Madrid exit

James Rodriguez is being lined up for a shock move across Madrid to join Atletico, according to reports in Spain.

The Colombian international is not part of Zinedine Zidane's plans and is set for a permanent exit after his two-year loan at Bayern Munich came to an end.

According to the front page of Spanish daily Marca , he is now closing in on a "bombshell" move across the capital city to join local rivals Atletico Madrid.

Rodriguez was heavily tipped to join Napoli but Marca claim he has been restraining their interest to wait and see whether he would be given the chance to replace Antoine Griezmann and stay in Madrid.

His wish now looks to have come true, with the 28-year-old said to be close to agreeing a deal to join Diego Simeone's side at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Rodriguez last provided an update on his future during the Copa America, speaking after Colombia's 1-0 win over Paraguay.

He said: "Right now I am thinking about the Copa America and I don't know where I'll be going.

"The decision depends on the club. I think there are some people inside the club who decide a lot and I can't do anything."

He also confirmed he had not discussed his future with Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane, adding: "I have not spoken with Zidane."

However, with the competition now over it seems his future is set to finally be resolved.

He was previously tipped for a Premier League move whilst Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly wanted to persuade Juventus to sign him.

But a La Liga stay could now be on the cards as Atletico Madrid look to rebuild without Griezmann with Rodriguez joining Portuguese wonderkid Joao Felix as their latest major attacking signing.
