James Rodriguez endures terrible Al-Rayyan debut after Everton transfer

James Rodriguez didn't enjoy the most successful start to life at Al-Rayyan, following his move from Everton last month.

The 30-year-old playmaker was the subject of transfer speculation throughout the summer, as the Blues attempted to move on the former Real Madrid star.

He had previously been offered to Porto as a potential makeweight in a deal for Luis Diaz, before Rodriguez eventually found a route out of Goodison, via the Qatari club.

Despite being made to wait a few weeks for his debut, as he recovered from injury, fans were out in full force at the weekend to see the Colombian for the first time - though the game did not go to plan.

Rodriguez made his first start in five months, having not played a competitive game since Everton’s 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United in May, and did manage 88 minutes before being substituted.

However, Al-Rayyan, managed by former Manchester United defender Laurent Blanc, ultimately fell to a 3-0 defeat to Al-Duhail.

Supporters had chosen to wear Colombia shirts and wave his national flag to celebrate his arrival but that did little to prevent Al-Duhail moving to second in the Qatar Stars League.

The away side fell behind after just three minutes and were 3-0 down before the hour mark.

Having fallen out of favour with the Colombia national team, Rodriguez will hope that regular football will see him be in contention for a spot at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

However, Everton boss Rafa Benitez insisted that the move was best for both parties, when asked about the attacking midfielder last month .

"The reality is that the player now is happy, because he has an option that he is pleased with. I said before, we have to maximise our resources,” the Spanish coach said.

"Considering all the injury record and all that we need for the team, I think it was important for us to change and then to move forward.

"Hopefully we can use this money to bring in another kind of player that maybe will be fine for us, and then we can fill the gaps that we have.

"And that's it. If he's happy and can score goals there, he can play well, it will be very good. For us, it's something that we needed to do to be sure we could move forward."
