James Robinson, a former Guardian reporter, is to run the press operation for Tom Watson’s bid to become deputy leader of the Labour party.
Robinson, who is married to shadow minister for women and equalities Gloria de Piero, is to leave Powerscourt at the end of this week to start work full time as director of communications for Watson, who is perhaps best known for his criticism of the Murdoch press during the phone-hacking scandal.
Before joining the public relations firm run by Rory Godson, Robinson spent 10 years at the Guardian and Observer, where he was media editor.
There were telltale signs of his new job on Twitter. His penultimate tweet on Tuesday dated back to 10 May.

At Powerscourt, Robinson advised companies on reputation management during times of crisis. He is the author of The Larry Diaries, a “memoir” by David Cameron’s cat, and crime novella Hacked to Death.
Robinson studied politics at the University of Nottingham and worked in Westminster as a research assistant for an MP.
