James Pattinson suspended for throwing ball at Daniel Hughes in Victoria vs NSW Sheffield Shield match

James Pattinson's throw injures NSW skipper Daniel Hughes

Victoria bowler James Pattinson has been fined 100 per cent of his match fee after being found guilty of throwing the ball at Daniel Hughes on the fourth day of his side's Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales.

Pattinson, 31, threw the ball at NSW batter Hughes late on day four, striking him on the foot as Victoria hunted wickets to secure the win.

Hughes, batting in obdurate fashion in an attempt to salvage a draw for the Blues, played a defensive shot back to Pattinson with the score on 6-193.

The 21-time Test player then picked up the ball on his follow through and, out of frustration, hurled it back at Hughes — who had not left his crease — striking him flush on the foot.

Hughes wheeled away, clearly in pain, and threw off his helmet before looking back at Pattinson.

The NSW batter was able to continue, making an unbeaten 89 from 319 balls, but his efforts were in vain as the Blues were bowled out for 247, handing Victoria a 174-run defeat.

The umpires took no action at the time of the incident on Monday, but Cricket Australia found the former Australia quick guilty of a level two offence, slapping him with a fine and banning him for the upcoming one-day cup match between the two sides on November 12.

Pattinson was charged and found guilty of throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a match.

He has the right to appeal against the decision.

Pattinson was playing his first four-day match since announcing his retirement from Test cricket due to injury.

He took 3-94 in the match, including 1-67 in the fourth innings.

Opener Hughes, 32, topscored for NSW in both innings, scoring 59 in NSW's first innings in which they were bowled out for just 140.
