James Norwood to Dundee United latest as Micky Mellon eyes reunion with Ipswich striker

Dundee United will launch a loan bid for James Norwood after landing Ryan Edwards.

The Tannadice club announced the signing of defender Edwards, 26, on a two-year contract after his release from Blackpool.

United boss Micky Mellon is now looking to strengthen his front areas and is keen on a loan move for striker Norwood from Ipswich Town.

The problem is that Fleetwood are also keen but Mellon is hoping the fact he got the best out of Norwood at Tranmere will convince him to move north.

The 29-year-old scored over 80 goals for Tranmere and averaged a goal, roughly, every second game.

Meanwhile, Edwards has insisted the chance to help Dundee United make their mark in the Premiership was too big an opportunity to turn down.

The defender signed a two-year contract at Tannadice yesterday after he secured his release from Blackpool.

The 26-year-old, who has also had spells at Blackburn, Morecambe and Plymouth, becomes Micky Mellon’s second signing after he landed Luke Bolton on-loan from Manchester City.

Edwards said: "As soon as I spoke to the gaffer and to Tony Asghar I knew I wanted to come up to the Scottish Premiership and I'm finally glad to be part of Dundee United's rebuild in the Premiership.

"I don't like to say I'm this or that, the fans will hopefully make that call themselves.

“I like everything and as footballers we need to do all sides of the game."

United boss Mellon had previously been keen to take Edwards to former club Tranmere. He is now in line to make his debut against Motherwell this weekend.

Mellon confirmed: "I'm delighted to finally get Ryan in the door. We need a strong squad and I believe we need that type of player that Ryan is.

“He will come in and add to what we already have so pleased to have him on board."

The Tannadice have also been linked with Ipswich defender Toto Nsiala.

They also asked the question about him a few weeks ago but that interest is now dead with the arrival of Edwards.
