James Newman says he's 'honoured' to represent the UK at Eurovision

James Newman is set to represent the UK at Eurovision this year after last year's contest was cancelled.

The singer-songwriter will have to write a brand new original song for the Eurovision Song Contest as 2020's efforts are now deemed ineligible.

The 35-year-old was set to compete for Britain last year with the track My Last Breath.

But he'll need to draw one more under new rules by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), who have told all competitors to write new tunes.

The other brother of pop star John Newman, James says he is "excited and honoured" to have another shot at Eurovision glory.

Graham Norton will lead the BBC's commentary of the Eurovision Song Contest (BBC/So TV/Christopher Baines/Matt Burlem)

He said: “I’m so excited and honoured to be getting a second chance at representing my country in the Eurovision Song Contest.

“I haven’t stopped making new music in lockdown and I can’t wait for everyone to hear the song I’m taking to Eurovision in 2021.”

Eurovision is scheduled to take place in May, but the Rotterdam event is unlikely to go ahead in its usual format.

The EBU created four scenarios, from an entirely remote contest to the one we're accustomed to seeing.

They said they are focusing on "scenario B", in which everyone at the Ahoy Arena practises social distancing rules.

Singers, staff and others will have to undergo frequent Covid-19 tests.

Acts will perform live on stage, but for those competitors that can't travel, recorded performances will be played to the audience.

The grand final is set to take place on May 22 and will be broadcast live on BBC One.

Graham Norton will provide commentary, while BBC Radio 2's live coverage will be hosted by Popmaster Ken Bruce.
