James Nesbitt to star in gritty new crime drama Suspect for Channel 4

By Tom Blackburn

James Nesbitt - star of iconic ITV drama Cold Feet, among many other acclaimed shows - is set to return to our screens in Suspect. And the new Channel 4 crime drama boasts a star-studded cast.

The eight-part series - an adaptation of the Danish drama Forhøret - stars Nesbitt as long-serving detective Danny Frater, who receives a major shock after conducting what he assumes is a routine ID check on a dead body. It turns out the body is that of his estranged daughter Christina (Imogen King).

To make the situation worse the doctor carrying out the post-mortem tells him his daughter's death was caused by suicide. But Frater doesn't believe the post-mortem and sets out to uncover the truth about what really happened to her.

Joining James Nesbitt in Suspect are a host of big names, including Richard E. Grant, Anne-Marie Duff, Joely Richardson, Ben Miller and Niamh Algar. Nesbitt has spoken highly of his co-stars on the show, hailing the “amazing” strength of the cast.

“They were also incredibly supportive and protective of me, I think instinctively, because they knew I was taking on a fairly big responsibility. It was a beautifully collaborative experience,” the 57-year-old said.

Suspect sees Frater working through a list of potential suspects episode by episode - with one of those suspects being Christina’s mentor, Harry, played by Grant. Gradually, Frater pieces together a clearer picture of his daughter’s tragic decline.

Nesbitt explained that every episode of the series is “an intensely theatrical double-hander, a psychological battle of wits between Danny and another character who may know something about his daughter’s untimely death”. The first episode of Suspect focuses on Danny Frater and Jackie (Joely Richardson), his pathologist colleague, in the immediate aftermath of his daughter’s death. Episode two centres on Frater and his late daughter’s partner, played by Niamh Algar.

Algar previously starred alongside Stephen Graham in Shane Meadows’ critically-acclaimed drama The Virtues, which also aired on Channel 4. Former Shameless star , meanwhile, plays Frater’s ex-wife Susannah in the new series.

Channel 4 hasn’t yet confirmed when the eight-part drama will air. However, the broadcaster promises viewers that Suspect is “coming soon”, and it’s expected to air later this year.
