James Nesbitt in West Belfast for BBC filming

Residents in Moyard welcomed film crews, production staff and our very own James Nesbitt to the area on Thursday for the filming of a new BBC series.

Described as a “compelling edge-of-the-seat thriller," Bloodlands will feature Nesbitt as a PSNI detective in the series written by Co Down man Chris Brandon.

And it's produced by TV veterans including Jed Mercurio who was involved in Line of Duty, Bodyguard and Derry Girls.

Sinn Féin Councillor Michael Donnelly told Belfast Live that there was "a great buzz in the area."

He added: "There was a really good atmosphere in Moyard on Thursday for the filming of Bloodlands. It's a new BBC drama series starring none other than Jimmy Nesbitt and it's been directed by the same producers of Line of Duty and Derry Girls.

"It was Jimmy's birthday, and the children from Matt Talbot Nursery School made him a birthday card when he visited. The residents just loved it."

Speaking about the project, James Nesbitt said: “It’s great to be back making a drama in and about Northern Ireland, which now has a film and television industry as good as any in the world. We have compelling scripts from a brilliant young writer who was raised in County Down, which are very exciting and psychologically complex. I can’t wait to start.”

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says: “In Bloodlands Chris has crafted a cracking contemporary thriller which manages to be both completely gripping while shining a light on to the legacy of the troubles in contemporary Northern Ireland. We are thrilled to be working with Chris, Jimmy, Jed and the team at HTM to bring this visceral story to BBC One.”
