James Milner talks up 'amazing' Leeds transfer amid Liverpool contract impasse

James Milner has opened up on the possibility of a return to Leeds United - admitting signing for the Whites again would be 'amazing'.

Boyhood Leeds fan Milner made his Premier League debut with the Yorkshire club 17 years ago and has maintained an affinity to the side that gave him his big break.

The midfielder will reach the end of his five-year contract at Liverpool at the end of this season and is free to speak to clubs over a potential summer move as of next month.

Milner remains locked in talks with the Reds over a new deal but the two parties are yet to reach an agreement - with the 33-year-old stating his desire to stay on Merseyside for at least another campaign.

He helped Liverpool to a sixth European crown last term and Jurgen Klopp's side are odds-on to snap their 30-year title drought this season, currently holding an eight-point advantage at the top of the table.

Speaking in October, Milne said: "My contract with Liverpool is up the end of the season but hopefully we’ll sort something out. I want to keep going as long as possible at the highest level."

But with nothing yet signed, he has talked up a fairytale return to Elland Road.

He told The Sportsman: "I’m a fan. I always follow the team and the results. So you can never say no or even yes because just so much changes in football, you never know what happens.

"At the moment I’m a Champions League winner with Liverpool and this year we’re really going for the Premier League, but I don’t know what the future will hold.

"It would be amazing to play for Leeds again but no one from the club has ever contacted me about that.

"People talk about my age and that I’m getting on, and could I continue after Liverpool, but I don’t think I’m typical physically for my age."
