James Milner's fear with Liverpool so close to Premier League title

James Milner says Liverpool are desperate to get their hands on the Premier League trophy amid fears the coronavirus pandemic will scupper their title hopes.

Liverpool were just two wins away from securing a first top-flight title in 30 years when the season was suspended in March following the Covid-19 outbreak.

June 12 is the new target for restarting the season after the 20 Premier League clubs met for their latest video conference on Friday.

But it is still unclear whether the campaign will resume then, with many players reportedly concerned about whether it will be safe for them to return to action.

Milner says he and his Liverpool teammates were determined to build on their Champions League triumph last season with more silverware.

They have since won the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, of course, but ending the club's 30-year wait for the title is the prize they really crave.

And Milner said the fear of being one-hit wonders has been driving Liverpool on.

“It’s a similar thing that we had at Man City," said Milner, who won two titles with Manchester City after first helping them to FA Cup glory.

“It was so important to get off the mark and win that first trophy and it was massive for us as a group.

“It’s always important to win that first one and we managed to get the Super Cup and the World Championship this year and it’d be nice to add more.

“But it was big to get over the line and add that first one together as a team and that then gives you all the tools to go on and push on, and hopefully we can win more.

“We don’t want to be known as the team that won just that one trophy. We want to push on and see if we can win as many as we can.”
