James Milner's classy Adrian gesture shows how united this Liverpool squad is

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian has revealed a classy gesture from James Milner in the aftermath of the UEFA Super Cup win in Istanbul.

The Spanish goalkeeper made his full Reds debut in the clash against Chelsea back in August only weeks after arriving at the club as a free agent following the departure of Simon Mignolet to Brugges.

Alisson Becker's calf injury in the opening weekend defeat of Norwich City thrust Adrian into the spotlight and he rose to the occasion immediately, saving the decisive penalty from Tammy Abraham in the penalty shoot-out following the 2-2 draw against the Londoners to clinch Liverpool's third Super Cup triumph and the first honour of his own career.

Now six months later, Adrian has spoken of vice-captain Milner's gesture in the aftermath of victory in the Beskiktas stadium.

Adrian told BBC Sport: James [Milner] told me to take the trophy with me for the night.

"It took me several seconds to realise he really meant it. Who better than me, he said. So I agreed."

The whirlwind nature of Adrian's introduction into the Liverpool team meant his parents and other relatives were not able to attend but the 33-year-old spoke of his pride at being able to enjoy the moment with his brother and best friend in Turkey.

”Getting into the room with the Super Cup, my first title. Their faces. Awesome."

"Everyone met at my parents' house [in Sevilla] - my wife, my closest friends, my in-laws.

“Everything happened so fast that they didn't even have the chance to fly to Turkey for the match, we couldn't arrange it.

“Receiving that video call and seeing tears of happiness from home was unforgettable.”
