James Milner on Leicester penalty and Liverpool's start in Premier League

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has revealed what was going through his mind ahead of netting the crucial penalty goal which saw the Reds defeat Leicester City 2-1 at Anfield.

Milner started the match in the midfield alongside Gini Wijnaldum and Fabinho and played a key role throughout the entire contest.

The 33-year-old provided a wonderful assist for Sadio Mane's opener as he produced a left-footed pass from deep which put the forward through on goal before the latter tucked the ball away.

James Maddison equalised for the Foxes in the 80th minute but Mane earned a penalty for Liverpool in stoppage time after Marc Albrighton brought him down.

After a VAR delay, Milner stepped up in the fifth minute of stoppage time to coolly slot the spot-kick into the back of the net, with the veteran explaining post-match what he was thinking during the key moment.

Asked how he keeps his composure in those tense moments, Milner told Sky Sports: "Practice and just concentrating on what you want to do and staying calm.

"First thing was whether it was going to be given with VAR. I was just trying to concentrate on the penalty (during the VAR delay).

"As long as you stay in the moment and think about what you want to do hopefully it will go in. Any time when it's the last minute to win a Premier League game, it's big."

The victory ensured Liverpool maintained their 100% record in the Premier League this season and Milner admits it was a massive result for the Reds.

"Leicester are a tough team and you could see how tired we were. It's been a tough period of games and that's what happens when you're successful and we want that," Milner added.

"The boys have played a lot of minutes so to dig deep is huge. The boys have done it time and time again.

"You need a bit of luck but it comes from creating chances. There is plenty to work on but it was about getting the result no matter what."
