James Milner makes Manchester United admission ahead of key clash

Leeds United academy product James Milner will be in the peculiar position of supporting Manchester United on Wednesday night.

The 33-year-old midfielder has now played for all three of Manchester United’s biggest rivals - Leeds United, Manchester City and now Liverpool - but needs them to do his current side a favour on Wednesday night.

Liverpool have been involved in a relentless title race with Manchester City this season, and could go on to hit 97 points and still not win the league.

The Reds are relying on City dropping points in one of their last four games. Of City's remaining fixtures, their Manchester rivals present the best chance of stopping them, as they welcome them to Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

“First time in my life,” replied Milner, when asked if he’ll be supporting Manchester United in Wednesday night’s derby.

“But I won’t be watching. It’s a bit of a waste of energy, willing the ball in the other goal.

“I can’t do anything about it. I’ll maybe put my phone away for a few hours and check it after.

“I’ve no idea what I’ll do, maybe go out for some food.”

City have won their last ten games in the league, while Manchester United suffered a humiliating 4-0 loss to Everton on Sunday.

Milner broke through back in the 2002-03 season at boyhood club Leeds and has enjoyed a fruitful 17-year career since, winning the league with City in 2012 and 2014, now gunning for his third title with Liverpool.

He’s the first and only Leeds-born player to win the league since Alan Smith in 2007, though Fabian Delph and Micah Richards also came through Leeds academy before lifting it with City.
