James Milner explains his changing role at Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp's perfect judgement call

James Milner has explained how his role at Liverpool is changing as he revealed a key trait of Jurgen Klopp's managerial style.

Milner helped the Reds follow their Champions League final win in June by lifting the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday by beating Chelsea on penalties in Istanbul.

The 33-year-old, who is in the last year of his current contract, has been a regular during the Klopp era and is vice-captain to club skipper Jordan Henderson.

The Reds boss said this summer Milner would have a part to play for as long as he remains in charge, having previously declared the former England international was improving with age.

And the midfielder believes his experience can now help him bring through Liverpool 's next generation.

“I think you can always learn,” said Milner. “I've been fortunate enough to be playing a long time and I've played with some great players and under some great managers, but every single day you go out on that field you can learn something.

“Maybe my role's a bit more about helping the younger guys now as well, but I can learn from my team-mates, I can learn from the manager.

“You've always got to try to improve as much as you can. I'll go into every training session with the mindset that you never know anything.

“If you've got the mindset where you think you know everything, you're going to be struggling.”

Milner, speaking to UEFA, also lifted the lid on the effect Klopp has on his players when matters aren't going well for Liverpool.

“He's on the side and he's bouncing around; he wants to be out there,” he said. “That energy's big for us when we're down.

“He seems to judge it right in terms of when to put an arm round the shoulder after a game, if we haven't played well or something.

“He knows what to say at half-time, of if you need a rocket he'll give you that as well.”
