James Milner couldn't get away from Gareth Bale after Liverpool's 2018 Champions League defeat

James Milner has revealed how he bumped into Gareth Bale in Spain just a week after his stunning goal for Real Madrid in the 2018 UEFA Champions League final.

The Welshman scored a brace, with the first of those goals a sensational bicycle-kick to secure a 3-1 win for Madrid in Kyiv.

It was a bitter blow for Liverpool who were hopeful of securing a seventh European title, having battled their way to the final with wins over Porto, Manchester City and AS Roma.

Speaking on BT Sport's 'What I Wore', Milner revealed a funny snippet following the match when reminded of Bale's spectacular strike.

"You hate this guy?" Milner was asked by the host as he was presented with Bale's shirt from that season.

"Haha, I don't hate him no," the Englishman responded.

"There are some bad memories in there obviously.

"The worst part about it was I went away to Spain just after this to get away from it and his buggy was parked in front of mine on the tee. I couldn't even get away from him a week later.

"The goal was incredible. In any game it's good but to change a game in a Champions League final like it did... sometimes you've just got to give it some respect."

Of course, Liverpool went on to win the trophy 12 months later, beating Tottenham Hotspur in May to secure another European title.

"Playing in a Champions League final is always special," Milner added.

"It was made more special by what happened the year before obviously, losing.

"Getting 97 points in the Premier League and not getting over the line.

"The pressure was on us, to have to do it two weeks later against another English team was always going to be tough, we know how good they are.

"On its own, it's special but to share it with the boys and what a great relationship we have in that dressing room, all the lads together and the team spirit.

"Yeah, it was just an amazing time for everyone."
