Good Morning Britain served up an unexpectedly adorable moment on Wednesday when James Middleton turned up with his dogs Inka and Isla and left host Susanna Reid completely smitten. James, who is 38 and best known as the Princess of Wales’s younger brother, was on the ITV sofa to talk about his new book and how animals helped him through a serious spell of depression.
Yet the conversation kept drifting thanks to the four-legged scene-stealers sprawled across the studio. James explained that his late spaniel Ella, was the real-life hero behind his memoir Meet Ella The Dog Who Saved My Life.
“When I was really struggling, Ella was the one who was able to step in and help me, and she was doing it consciously. I truly believe she was consciously knowledgeable about how she was helping me”, reported the Daily Record.
While he was sharing that heartfelt memory, Susanna was cuddling Inka, who had settled right beside her and decided her face needed a thorough lick. Laughing and wiping her cheek, she admitted, “I’ve barely listened to a word you have said. I am in the moment with Inka, that unfortunately means that I’m not in the moment with anyone else.” James and co-host Ed Balls burst out laughing, and the dog kept right on wagging.
Once everyone regained composure, the trio talked about whether offices should allow pets. James is firmly in the yes camp. “Dogs improve prod in the workplace, so I think if you can’t have a dog in the workplace, you should be encouraged to bring it because they do improve, increase productivity.”
He did concede they can be “a distraction,” and after watching Susanna forget her lines, nobody argued. Away from the canine chao,s Good Morning Britain has been tweaking its presenting line up. Viewers usually wake up to Susanna next to either Ed Balls or Richard Madeley, but the Bank Holiday saw Ranvir Singh and Robert Rinder take charge.
Social media had mixed feelings about the pairing, yet everyone seemed delighted by the surprise appearance of weather favourite Des Coleman, who stepped in for the ever busy Laura Tobin. Comments on X came thick and fast. “We like Des and he should always fill in for Laura when she’s away doing whatever she does. Always a pleasure to see him.” Another post agreed, “Love Des so cheerful.”
A third added, “And that people is how the weather should be presented.” Back in the studio, Susanna wrapped up the James Middleton chat with a final scratch behind Inka’s ears and a promise to get the carpets cleaned.
The moment instantly went viral because viewers rarely see her drop the poised professional mask quite so completely. Judging by the grins in the control room, ITV producers realised they had struck gold. As one insider joked later, it might be time to add a dog cam alongside the usual angles so the nation never misses another impromptu cuddle.
Whether or not Inka becomes a regular fixture remains to be seen, but Wednesday’s show underlined why live television can still surprise. A prince’s sister in law, a pair of affectionate dogs, and one unscripted confession from a seasoned presenter combined to create breakfast telly magic. Viewers may have tuned in for current affairs, yet it was a slobbery lick that set social media buzzing long after the credits rolled.
