James Michael Tyler’s favourite TV: 'Would I like to see Friends brought back? It would be tragic'

Unmissable show?

My girlfriend was a big fan of Lost, so we just watched every episode of that. It took about two months. Trying to keep all the plot holes and storylines in our minds was a challenge. That was a difficult binge-watch, with a nice pay off. And Episodes, Matt Le Blanc’s show. I think that’s brilliant. I was on an episode of Episodes about three years ago. It was surreal because they flew me to London to film a show that’s supposed to take place in Los Angeles. It was quite an experience.

Earliest TV memory?

Frankenstein, the original movie, was on TV when I was tiny. It wasn’t the first airing – I’m not that old – but I remember cowering round the corner of the living room, and whenever he was on screen, the monster, I would run down the hallway. It terrified me. I’ve revisited it, and it’s not quite as terrifying as when I was a child.

Bring back…

Seinfeld was fantastic. There was always that perceived competition between Friends and Seinfeld back in the day, but I loved both shows. I love Curb Your Enthusiasm, too. It’s supposedly on an extended hiatus, because Larry David does it when he feels like it, but I’d love to see them bring that back soon. Would I like to see Friends brought back? No, I really wouldn’t. I think it ended on the right note with everything tied up in a nice little package. It wouldn’t be the same to see people in their 40s having the same life problems as the friends did in their 20s. It wouldn’t be a comedy. It would be tragic. Hopefully there are other original ideas out there instead.

Pitch us a TV show…

I’m currently writing scripts with my girlfriend, so I’m not going to share my pitch right now. Someone will have to give us an option first!

Mastermind specialist subject?

Science. I have a degree in geology. We have Jeopardy over here, of course, and I love trivia games. I like geology, archaeology. I like rocks! I’m kind of a nerd that way.

Friends airs exclusively on Comedy Central every day from 5pm
