James McClean to miss Ireland's opening World Cup qualifiers with injury

James McClean will miss the Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualifiers next month with a foot injury.

His Stoke City boss Michael O'Neill said the winger will be sidelined for at least a month.

After their 2-1 EFL Championship loss to Brentford on Saturday, O'Neill said: "McClean had an injection on a foot injury so the time frame for him is four to six weeks."

Ireland start their World Cup 2022 qualifying campaign in Belgrade against Serbia on March 24. They then take on Luxembourg in their second qualifier at the Aviva Stadium on March 27.

It's another headache for Ireland boss Stephen Kenny who is already without injured pair John Egan and Callum O'Dowda for the opening qualifiers.
