James McClean returns to Stoke City squad after accepting punishment for Instagram video

James McClean has returned to the Stoke City squad after accepting his punishment for breaking Covid-19 regulations.

The Republic of Ireland winger posted a video to social media showing him boxing in a gym, a breach of English football's strict Covid-19 regulations.

McClean was suspended by the club for the Instagram post, with Stoke chief Tony Scholes describing the situation as 'very disappointing'.

The Derry native missed his side's 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, with his team-mate Nick Powell celebrating a goal by showing off his boxing moves in a cheeky nod to McClean.

McClean returned to training on Monday, and is likely to be available for Tuesday's clash with Rotherham United.

He has also been fined one week's wages for the incident.

A club statement confirmed he "accepted what he did was wrong and has apologised unreservedly".

"James is available," said manager Michael O'Neill.

"He obviously missed Saturday's game. He realised that what he did was not within the club's guidelines for how players should behave.

"We've dealt with that, he's accepted his punishment and we move on from that.

"The most important thing is that we were seen to do the right thing, which I think the club were very strong on that."
