James McClean receives warm reception from Wigan Athletic fans after rejoining Latics for second spell

James McClean received a warm welcome from Wigan Athletic fans after returning to the Latics for a second spell on Tuesday.

The Republic of Ireland winger has signed an initial one-year contract with the League One club after departing Stoke City.

McClean, who was unveiled before Wigan’s league clash with Wycombe, spent two years a the DW Stadium between 2013 and 2015.

The 32-year-old, who has joined for an undisclosed fee, scored 10 goals in 86 appearances for the club before leaving for West Bromwich Albion.

He brings a wealth of experience to Leam Richardson’s team having made over 300 appearances in the Premier League and Championship.

It is hoped McClean, who scored 12 goals in 111 appearances for Stoke, will be available for Wigan’s League One trip to Charlton on Saturday.

Wigan tweeted McClean’s unveiling in front of Wigan’s fans before Tuesday night’s game with Wycombe.

Stoke manager Michael O'Neill had confirmed at the weekend that he was trying to offload the Derry man.

"James is part of the U23s," said the Stoke boss. "He’s available to other clubs but as yet no club has taken up that option as far as I understand."
