James McClean calls Leo Varadkar a 'ball bag' as he hails Sinn Fein's election results

James McClean has called Taoiseach Leo Varadkar a 'ball bag' as he hailed Sinn Fein's election results.

The Fine Gael leader became the first Taoiseach in history not to top a General Election poll on Sunday as he had to wait for the fifth count to get re-elected in his Dublin West constituency.

Sinn Fein enjoyed an incredible election result, which saw them top the first preference poll with 24.5%. Fianna Fáil received 22.2%, while Fine Gael got 20.9%.

In a now expired post on his Instagram story, McClean celebrated the results by saying: "History being made @sinnfein. Results also confirm that Leo is a (ball and bag emojis)."

The Republic of Ireland star also shared a clip of the Wolfe Tones singing 'A Nation Once Again' on his Instagram account.

Mary Lou McDonald warned her political rivals on Sunday that her party are only getting started.

She said moments after entering the RDS count centre in Dublin the Sinn Fein vote was not “transient”.

Ms McDonald added: “This is not a protest vote. This is certainly an election that is historic in proportions.

“This is changing the shape and the mould of Irish politics. This is not a transient thing.

“This is just the beginning.”

The Irish Mirror has contacted Fine Gael for a comment on McClean's comments.
