James McCarthy signs Celtic deal with midfielder set to join on four-year contract

James McCarthy has agreed a four-year deal with Celtic to join his boyhood heroes.

The midfielder is a free agent after leaving Crystal Palace and looks finally set to join his boyhood heroes after being linked with a move for a long time.

And it's a lengthy contract for a player who has been plagued with injuries in recent seasons but Celtic will hope he's over the issues that he's had.

And now he has signed and the former Hamilton midfielder will make the return to the Scottish Premiership, more than a decade after he joined Wigan.

The Republic of Ireland international made just 17 appearances in all competitions last year as he dealt with his injury problems.

He’s played more than 30 games just once since 2016 with the same injury issues leaving him with just 20 appearances in his last three seasons at Everton.

It looked like he had finally got over them when he joined Palace and made 35 appearances in 2019/20 but they came back with a bang last season.

The injury problems began with a broken leg while at Everton and he’s been dealing with them ever since.

But he’ll look to kickstart his career at Celtic Park and will add plenty of bite to Ange Postecoglou’s midfield.

McCarthy has made 43 appearances for Ireland and won the FA Cup during his time at Wigan.
