James McCarthy ruled out of Ireland squad for friendly against England

James McCarthy is out of the Ireland squad for tonight’s friendly clash with England at Wembley.

The FAI has confirmed that the Crystal Palace midfielder will miss the game for family reasons.

McCarthy had been in line to start the game with manager Stephen Kenny chasing a first win at the sixth attempt.

Yesterday, Kenny had to rule out Callum Robinson after the West Brom forward tested positive for Covid-19.

Brighton forward Aaron Connolly was also forced out of the squad with a hamstring injury while Enda Stevens misses the game with a knee problem.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Harry Arter has been carrying a calf injury ahead of tonight’s game.

Kenny is desperate for a win in the next three games against England, Wales and Bulgaria to belatedly get his reign up and running.

And he added: “We have to do ourselves justice so the players show they are a good team.”
