James McCarthy names the important similarity between Crystal Palace and Celtic

James McCarthy has been impressed with the Crystal Palace faithful since joining the club in the summer from Everton.

The Republic of Ireland international made his first start against West Ham United, after numerous appearances from the bench and the sound of the Eagles support has already left an impression.

A good atmosphere is something the midfielder knows a little bit about having grown up as a Celtic fan and witnessed a few Old Firm derbies.

McCarthy told the official match day programme: "Early football for me was always playing as a kid. I've always been a Celtic fan; all my family are Celtic fans. From when I was born, I've had the Celtic strips. Obviously as a kid, you're always watching. We'd go and watch the games. My brothers used to take me.

"I went to quite a lot of them [Old Firm derbies]. I was younger, maybe eight or nine. I'd always be at the game.

"It's an amazing atmosphere, an incredible atmosphere and one that you really enjoy.

"You always find you want to play in something like that. We've got good fans here [at Palace] and the noise at home is very good. It's important and the fans travel well for away days."

McCarthy is pleased with more than just the sound of the supporters however. The 28-year-old appears to be settling in well.

He said: "I've been enjoying it. The boys have been amazing with me, the staff, everybody has been brilliant. It's a real family club and I feel as if I am enjoying it."
