James McCarthy is Celtic 'target' with January transfer swoop reportedly being considered

Celtic are reportedly investigating the possibility of singing James McCarthy in the January transfer window.

The former Hamilton star has been linked with a move to Celtic Park on more than one occasion and Eurosport claim The Hoops are looking at a potential move for the midfielder next month.

Shane Duffy was Neil Lennon’s big name signing from the English Premier League during the summer transfer window, although the Brighton defender has struggled to meet the standards expected of him after making the move north.

The middle of the park seemed to be an area that was ripe for new blood in recent weeks with Scott Brown’s form dipping.

However, the successful introduction of David Turnbull and Ismaila Soro to the Celtic engine room will have given Lennon food for thought, while Brown looked back to his old self during Sunday’s Scottish Cup final victory over Hearts.

McCarthy grew up a Celtic fan and could be open to a temporary switch, having not featured regularly for Palace under Roy Hodgson in recent weeks, which is perhaps a good thing after they were hammered 7-0 by champions Liverpool at the weekend.

However, Aston Villa have also been credited with an interest in the Republic of Ireland international, and Celtic may have to move one or two bodies out to create a midfield place in their squad for McCarthy.
