James McCarthy Celtic transfer could happen as Ange Postecoglou seeks midfield addition

James McCarthy is reportedly a transfer target for Celtic.

The Republic of Ireland international is a free agent after leaving Crystal Palace during the summer and the Daily Mail report that the Hoops are considering a move.

Ange Postecoglou is in dire need of reinforcements after a dreadful start to the season, crashing out of the Champions League qualifiers and losing their Scottish Premiership opener to Hearts.

Former Hamilton star McCarthy was one of 14 released by the Eagles at the end of their contracts and his versatility in midfield could prove useful to Celtic.

After Scott Brown’s departure, they could do with experience in the middle of the park to compliment Ismaila Sorro and David Turnbull.

McCarthy grew up supporting the club and knows Scottish football after bursting onto the scene as a teenager with Accies.

Liel Abada, Kyogo Furuhashi and Carl Starfelt have already come in the door at Celtic Park but Postecoglou knows he needs more new faces before the window shuts at the end of this month.

More will likely leave as well with Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie in the final year and month of their respective contracts and aren’t short of interest.
