James McCarthy signs for Celtic as boyhood fan pens four year deal

Former Crystal Palace and Everton midfielder James McCarthy has signed a four-year contract with Celtic.

The 30-year was a free agent but frenzied speculation has suggested a move to his boyhood club is in the offing.

Tottenham keeper Joe Hart has also signed a three-year deal with Celtic and it gives Ange Postecoglou two experienced operators after a nightmare start to the season.

McCarthy has spent the past 11 seasons in the English Premier League with Wigan before stays at Goodison Park and with the Eagles since 2017.

The cultured Republic of Ireland international will strengthen Celtic in the engine room after the departure of long-term skipper Scott Brown in the summer.

The Parkhead side could hand McCarthy his debut in Sunday's Premiership clash with Dundee while Hart could even join up with Postecoglou's squad in Czech Republic and make a quickfire bow against Jablonec in Thursday's Europa League tie.

McCarthy has overcome niggling injury issues and was a key contributor under Roy Hodgson in each of the past two seasons and the Daily Mail say a deal is done.

Celtic have already signed Liel Abada, Carl Starfelt and Kyogo Furuhashi this summer.
