The actor James McAvoy was assaulted in a bar in Toronto, it has been reported.

According to People magazine, McAvoy was “sucker punched” by another visitor to Charlotte’s Room bar on Monday evening, two days after the premiere of his directorial debut, California Schemin’, at the Toronto film festival.

People magazine quoted “a source close to McAvoy” who said: “James was having a casual get-together with the producers of his movie and, as he later learned when speaking with the staff, there was a man who drank too much who was getting escorted out. James’s back was to him and the man just punched him.”

EW magazine reports that MacAvoy had “not interacted with the man previously, nor did he provoke the attack” and “other patrons of Charlotte’s Room rushed in to restrain the man, who was eventually escorted out”.

Afterwards, McAvoy reportedly “stayed at the bar and even laughed off the incident with other patrons and the staff”.

California Schemin’ is based on the real-life adventures of Scottish rap duo Silibil N’ Brains, who passed themselves off as American to secure a record deal in a story previously told in the 2013 documentary The Great Hip-Hop Hoax.
