James McAvoy has donated £275,000 towards a doctor-run crowdfunder to provide essential PPE equipment to the NHS in the fight against the coronavirus.
The 'Masks for Heroes' campaign was initially founded with the aim of raising £200,000 but has now hit over £1million in donations from across the UK. The equipment includes protective gloves, masks, gowns and visors.
Dr Mona Barzin , Dr Salaj Masand, Mr Ravi Visagan and Mr Nav Kumar began the campaign to acquire donations towards purchasing the items from accredited suppliers to add to the NHS's dwindling supply.
Since his donation, the 'Shameless' and 'Filth' star has released a video in support of the 'Masks for Heroes' initiative, asking the public to get involved and help save lives:
"We have all heard stories of doctors and nurses having to buy their own protective equipment from the internet or DIY stores, the products are not good enough and frankly neither is that situation.
"The situation is truly urgent and time is of the essence.
"They (Masks for Heroes) have found a way to get more personal protective equipment to the NHS frontline staff using international suppliers selling verified CE and EN equipment.
"Help us help the government to help the NHS to save lives, it is that simple."
