James Martin blames Holly Willoughby and Phil Schofield for his 'grumpy' TV persona

TV chef James Martin is known for his no-nonsense approach in the kitchen.

And during an appearance on Friday's Loose Women the cooking guru was dubbed "grumpy" by Nadia Sawalha.

The Loose Women star said she appreciated James, 48, is true to himself when on TV and told that she respected him for not pretending to be bright and cheery when filming cooking segments on This Morning.

In response to Nadia's comments, the Yorkshire native explained that he is often grumpy when starring on the popular ITV show - fronted by Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield - due to having to get up at 4 am to get the studio and having to deal with "random" questions he is asked on-screen.

After James was introduced on the show, which he appeared on via video link, Nadia said: "You are not showbiz at all - to be honest sometimes on This Morning you are so grumpy but I love that you don’t care."

Explaining why his TV manner is not always top-notch, the Saturday Kitchen Live personality told: "Well I’ve got to get up at 4 o’clock in the morning and as you know if you have a restaurant through these times it is not the easiest at the moment."

Hinting that he does not appreciate the line of questioning that Holly and Phil sometimes go down when he is busy in the kitchen, he continued: "And some of the questions they ask you is random!"

In March, things took an odd turn on This Morning during one of James' cooking segments where he was invited on to share a recipe for choux buns.

As James attempted to talk through the recipe, Holly and Phil kept interrupting him - with Phillip even asking his co-host: "Have I still got bayleaf in my teeth?"

Holly then said she gets the word "whisk" mixed up with the word "bush" all the time, before attempting to beatbox as James continued making his pastry.

As she tucked into to some previously made choux buns, she told James: "They taste better than they look," as Phillip giggled beside her.

Viewers tuning in at home were stunned by some of Holly's remarks, and took to Twitter to comment.

"What planet is Holly on this morning! #thismorning," one person asked, while another commented: "Did holly just admit she needs a slash #ThisMorning."

However, other fans of the show believed that hosting duo Ant and Dec were behind the skit and were doing it as part of an episode of Saturday Night Takeaway.

One tweeted: "Someone is in the ears of the ITV lot today... Ant & Dec I think! #Lorraine #ThisMorning."

Another posted: "If that was an Ant & Dec wind up on James Martin as some people are saying, it’s gonna need some serious editing cos it just wasn’t funny. #thismorning."

A third added: "Ant & Dec were definitely in their ears #thismorning," and a fourth said: "Oh here we go.... someone is in Phil & Holly’s ear... #ThisMorning Ant & Dec no doubt."

The truth later came out when Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway aired revealing that the whole segment at been a trick on James.

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12:30pm on ITV.
