James Marsden's style has 'devolved'

James Marsden has opened up about his style choices

James Marsden is convinced his fashion sense has "devolved" over the years.

The X-Men star admits he now prefers "function" over "form" and has embraced a classic style which usually involves wearing jeans and a T-shirt with the actor explaining he's used guidance from a stylist to help him embrace a "classic" look.

He told WWD: "I'd say [my style has] devolved. Nowadays, I'm so much more function than form. My day-to-day has always been very simple and classic - jeans, T-shirt.

"I do care about what I look like when I go out in public, and I like to look nice, but I always believe it has to be tied to who you are: organic, so the clothes aren't wearing you."

He went on to add: "My stylist has always helped me stay classic and stay me, but with a little bit of flair. You can have a really nice suit tailored beautifully to you or a classic tuxedo and black bow tie, but dress it up a little with a pin or specific details.

"My style has always been very timeless, very classic. When I do get dressed up, I'm probably not the one setting the red carpet on fire, but I believe it has to be authentically you - you can stay elegant, stay classy, even be fashion-forward, and still be classic."

James previously opened up about his style in an interview with CNN in which he revealed his go-to clothing brand.

He said: "Paul Smith off the rack - it's a slim cut [suit], and I don't need to have it tailored. I always feel like an eight-year-old when I dress up in a suit, like, when can I take this thing off?

"But I wore a black Dolce and Gabbana suit to the première of Hairspray that was like: 'OK, now I know what a great suit is'. Classic, clean lines, sharp, sharp, sharp."

He went on to reveal how his style changes depending on where he is, adding: "In L.A. it's too easy to throw on a pair of American Apparel sweats, a T-shirt and running shoes and just wear those for days.

"In New York, I actually like looking nice. Maybe I'm just getting older, but young guys need to pull their pants up."
