James Maddison responds to Manchester United transfer speculation

James Maddison admits he is dreaming of playing at the 'highest level' possible amid speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United.

The Leicester midfielder has taken the Premier League by storm following his arrival at the King Power Stadium a year ago, with his performances leading to talk of an even bigger move ahead.

United and Tottenham have both been linked with a potential move for the England international, and speaking over the weekend Maddison admitted his ambition is to play at the highest stage he can reach.

“I want to play at the highest level my ability will allow me to,” Maddison said.

“I like to think I’ve my head screwed on with the transfers I’ve made. I’ve played League One, in Scotland, the Championship and the Premier League. I worked my way up.”

Maddison was an unused substitute as England eased past Bulgaria 4-0 on Saturday evening, but United will get a closer look at the 22-year-old when Leicester visit Old Trafford next weekend.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted to add creativity to his midfield during the summer and speaking last month Maddison's former teammate Danny Simpson backed him for a move to United.

Asked if he saw the move happening during an appearance on Goals on Sunday, Simpson said: "Yeah.

"He, for me, is world class. I think people are speaking right now but honestly I think for an English player as well, honestly he’s world class and he’s only going to get better and better.

"He’s that good, honestly. Honestly, he’s got it all.

"He’s quick in his mind so I think he doesn’t need to have blistering pace running past people because he’s clever and he thinks before everyone else.

"He gets in them little pockets, gets into the right spaces, he’s kind of got eyes in the back of his head.

"The way he receives the ball and turns and puts defenders on the back foot."
