James Maddison provides England injury update amid World Cup squad concern

Leicester City playmaker James Maddison has cooled injury fears as he revealed that he had a positive scan after he was forced off against West Ham on the eve of the World Cup.

The 25-year-old was included in Gareth Southgate's 26-man England squad that will travel to Qatar as the Three Lions look to end their 56 years of hurt international stage.

Maddison was among the names with a question mark hanging over them prior to the World Cup squad announcement. There were multiple calls to include the Foxes star man.

The midfielder has been integral for Brendan Rodgers' side as they picked themselves up from the foot of the Premier League table, surging up to 13th going into the extended winter break.

"The injury is okay," he told reporters after England's first training session in the Middle East. "We had a scan the day before we met up and it was a positive scan.

"I had a little problem in the lead up to the West Ham game. I wanted to play, I didn't want to not play because of the World Cup, that's not the sort of person I am. I wanted to show the focus was still there."

Southgate and Maddison were made to sweat on Saturday afternoon as the midfielder further staked his claim to be featured in the final squad with the opening goal in their 2-0 win over the Hammers.

However, 17 minutes later, he was replaced by Dennis Praet through injury. But the injuries fear were eased and a further injury boost was provided as there were no absentees in their first training session ahead of Monday's group opener against Iran.
