Leicester City midfielder James Maddison has withdrawn from the England squad because of illness.

Gareth Southgate’s side face the Czech Republic in Prague on Friday before taking on Bulgaria in Sofia next week in a pair of Euro 2020 qualifiers.

The 22-year-old has twice been called into the England squad, but is still to make his debut. He was an unused substitute in the Uefa Nations League meetings with Spain and Croatia in in October last year, before also seeing no action in the qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo last month.

Maddison has been in terrific form for Leicester so far this season, with three goals and two assists in eight appearances in all competitions.

He is the second player to pull out of the Three Lions squad, after Fabian Delph returned to Everton with a muscle injury.

Southgate has decided against calling up a replacement, leaving Chelsea duo Mason Mount and Ross Barkley as his recognised attacking midfield options.
