James Hird considered for role at Fremantle Dockers

The Fremantle Dockers have confirmed former Essendon coach James Hird is a candidate for a part-time role at the club.

The 45-year-old is being considered for a position as an opposition analyst and would be based in Melbourne if he was successful.

"We are in the early stages of considering a number of possible candidates and that process has not yet been completed," Dockers football operations manager Chris Bond said.

The process began earlier this week, when the Dockers asked the AFL to confirm there would be no issues associated with approaching Hird.

Players welcome news

The 1996 Brownlow Medallist served a suspension for his role in the Bombers doping scandal, but returned to football last year, presenting the Norm Smith Medal at the 2017 Grand Final.

Fremantle captain Nathan Fyfe said earlier he would welcome Hird to the club if he was chosen.

"It would be great," Fyfe said.

"This is literally the first I'm hearing of it. He's an idol of mine and that'd be unreal but I can't really comment because you're breaking the news to me now."
