James Gunn reportedly signs on to write 'Suicide Squad' sequel in first gig since 'Guardians of the Galaxy' firing

James Gunn's first move since being axed from "Guardians of the Galaxy" is a jump from Marvel to DC.

Gunn has signed on to write and maybe direct "Suicide Squad 2," sources told The Wrap Tuesday.

That marks his first job since July, when he was fired from Disney and the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise after his decade-old tweets joking about rape and pedophilia surfaced.

After his ousting, Gunn apologized and said that he had changed since firing off the tweets, which came years before the first "Guardians" movie.

"Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I've developed as a person, so has my work and my humor," he said in a statement.

"My days saying something just because it's shocking and trying to get a reaction are over... I understand and accept the business decisions taken today."

The first "Suicide Squad" flick opened in August 2016 and made nearly $750 million. Stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto are all expected to reprise their villainous roles and Joel Kinnaman has publicly said he plans to be back as Agent Rick Flag.

Gavin O'Connor already wrote a draft of the script and it's unclear how much of his plans will be used in Gunn's version.

Immediate comparisons arose to Joss Whedon, who made the same switch when he left Marvel and "The Avengers" and moving to the DCEU for "Batgirl," before eventually stepping down from that job as well. Patty Jenkins also transitioned after leaving "Thor 2" at Marvel to her award-winning "Wonder Woman" at DC.

Representatives for neither Gunn nor DC returned a request for comment.
