Batman as a character is thrilling to dive into. He’s the world’s greatest detective, he’s a millionaire by day and a vigilante by night, and he’s just some dude. Which makes the things he gets into a little outlandish at times. Meaning that co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn’s right.
One of the things about Bruce Wayne that often gets forgotten is that he is a man with no superhuman abilities. On a team where almost everyone else has some kind of skill that makes them inhuman. Not Bruce though. He’s just rich. And that makes some of the things he does teeter on the insane. This regular guy is willingly going up against Gods?!
In a clip from the behind the scenes of Superman, Gunn is seen talking about these characters and says to star David Corenswet that if he was making a Batman movie, he could get into the specifics of who the character is. Which includes the fact that Bruce is not really the most sane person known to man.
“Even with Batman, if I was doing Batman I’d get into it it like Batman’s a f*****g maniac. So he puts on a f*****g scary bat costume and goes out and tries to scare people,” Gunn said. And that’s pretty much it.
Bruce Wayne as a character is someone who wants to protect Gotham and, to his credit, does so even if it may not be the best for him as a human man. He is one of the leaders of the Justice League and is, again, just a guy. He’s standing next to an Amazon and a superhuman being from Krypton that basically has no weakness and then there is a guy who has money.
That is, as Gunn points out, what makes him special but it also makes Batman as a character a little unhinged.
