James Garner's Nottingham Forest stance laid out amid transfer reports

New boss Steve Cooper has been tipped to get the best out of James Garner at Nottingham Forest.

The Manchester United midfielder is in his second spell at the City Ground, having previously spent the latter half of last season with the Reds.

He is due to spend the whole campaign with Forest, who now have his former England Under-17s manager, Cooper, in charge.

The Sun say United inserted a break clause as part of his summer switch to the Reds, meaning he could be recalled in January.

That is something which is generally standard practice in loan deals - making Garner’s situation nothing unusual.

And his dad says there is no question about his commitment to Forest.

He said on Twitter: “Listen. James knows that there (is) a callback clause. But let me assure you all James plays with his heart on his sleeve and James will give 100% to Forest. He loves the fans and the club and he will give blood sweat and tears for his teammates. Don't doubt him.”

He added: “After the coaches at Manchester United Steve Cooper probably knows him best. Steve will get the best out of James and James will give his best for Steve.”

Garner has made six appearances in the Garibaldi so far this term, adding to the 20 he racked up in 2020/21.

He was included in the starting XI for Cooper’s first match at the helm on Saturday, which finished in a 1-1 draw at home to Millwall.

When he put pen to paper in the summer, the 20-year-old said a return Trentside was always top of his list, despite interest from elsewhere.

“It is tough. You’ve got a lot of people ringing you and messaging you, and you see a lot of stuff on social media,” he told NottinghamshireLive- at the time. “But ultimately the decision is down to me.

“People can try to persuade me, but the decision is down to me, and I always had Forest in the back of my head - coming off the back of last season and the progress I made here.

“There’s going to be people wanting me to go to wherever they want me to go to! Likewise, here.

“But I always had Forest in the back of my mind.”
