James Garner Manchester United selection vs FK Partizan explained

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has handed James Garner his full Manchester United debut against Partizan Belgrade after his 'excellent' performances for the Under-23s.

The midfielder was given a first team cameo last season when he came off the bench against Crystal Palace in the Premier League win but has had to wait until now for his first start having been on the bench for the draw against Liverpool at the weekend and the wings against Astana and Rochdale earlier in the season.

Solskjaer said he has been impressed with the 18-year-old who has excelled for Neil Wood's under-23s this season, averaging a goal every 108 minutes.

"He's has been excellent and he's been waiting for his chance," Solskjaer told MUTV ahead of the Europa League clash. "Tonight with the experience he has around, it will be a good start for him. He's got more or less 300 caps around him so don't think he's ever played with so much experience around him and he's an exciting player."

Solskjaer also spoke about his decision to hand Harry Maguire the captain's armband for the first time explaining how he hopes it will push the England defender to the next level.

"Harry is a leader and we brought him to the club to take us one step further and so far he has been brilliant and hopefully the armband will become an even bigger leader because he's been excellent so far," Solskjaer said.
