James Gandolfini's son Michael to play young Tony in Sopranos prequel

James Gandolfini’s son said he is “thrilled” to play a young Tony Soprano in the upcoming Sopranos sequel.

The actor, who died aged 51 in 2013, was famed for playing the New Jersey mafia boss in the HBO drama.

Michael Gandolfini. 19, will play the young version of his father’s role in prequel film The Many Saints Of Newark.

Michael said: “It’s a profound honour to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano.

“I’m thrilled that I am going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled.”

He is best known for his break-out role in HBO’s The Deuce.

The Many Saints Of Newark is set during the Newark race riots of the Sixties and focuses on Dickie Moltisanti as he mentors Tony.

Sopranos creator David Chase is at the helm of the project, which will also star Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga and Jon Bernthal.
