James Gandolfini's personal struggles impacted his performance on The Sopranos.

James Gandolfini's personal struggles affected the final seasons of 'The Sopranos.'

In a recent book titled 'On Locations: Lessons Learned from My Life On Set with The Sopranos and in the Film Industry,' author Mark Kamine sheds light on the personal struggles faced by James Gandolfini, the iconic actor who portrayed Tony Soprano in the hit HBO series 'The Sopranos.' Kamine, who worked as a location scout on the show, reveals that Gandolfini's demons began to take a toll during the final seasons of the show.

During the filming of the 'Pie-O-My' episode at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, Gandolfini's behavior became increasingly erratic. Kamine recounts an incident wherein the actor, in a sorry state, arrived on set four hours late, cursing and stumbling his way through his lines. It became apparent that Gandolfini's reliability was diminishing, prompting HBO to add a clause in his contract that held him responsible for shoot-day costs if he missed work due to excessive consumption.

Kamine suggests that Gandolfini's struggles were rooted, at least partially, in his discomfort with fame. The author describes another instance when the crew was informed that Gandolfini wouldn't be showing up at all, leading co-star Edie Falco, who played Carmela Soprano, to express her disbelief and frustration. Falco, known for her professionalism and dedication, was always prepared and in character, leaving Gandolfini in awe of her abilities.

Although Gandolfini's behavior was often chaotic and challenging, Kamine notes that everyone was willing to endure it because his portrayal of Tony Soprano was unparalleled. His expressive features, nuanced performances, and restrained gestures contributed greatly to the impact of the show. Yet, amidst the chaos, there were moments that were truly heartbreaking. Kamine recalls an instance where Gandolfini failed to recognize the homeowner whose residence served as Tony's house in the show, demonstrating the extent of his personal struggles.

Despite the frustrations he caused, Gandolfini was beloved on set. He showed his appreciation for the crew by having copious amounts of sushi delivered every Friday night. At the end of each season, he generously gifted everyone, often including gift certificates worth hundreds of dollars. In the final season, he even gave out watches engraved with a heartfelt message, honoring the legacy of the show.

Sadly, James Gandolfini passed away in 2013 at the age of 51 due to a heart attack. Kamine attended the emotional service held at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, reflecting the lasting impact Gandolfini had on those around him. As 'The Sopranos' celebrates its 25th anniversary, we remember the incredible talents of James Gandolfini and the indelible mark he left on the world of television.
