James Donaldson is happy to do the ugly stuff as he chases a new Leeds Rhinos contract

One of the big talking points ahead of Leeds Rhinos' return to the field is the impact Sean Long will have on their attack.

There have been new drills and new styles of play developed with a view of making the Rhinos' attack quicker and more unpredictable.

But in amongst plenty of change, there will be at least one consistent in the shape of James Donaldson.

"I just want to be myself," he says.

"There are different types of players around me who play the game differently. I bring energy and enthusiasm when the boys are tired. I don't want to try and become anything else, I know what I bring to the team, it's about doing what I do even better and not trying to become something I'm not."

That's not to say Donaldson is an old dog unwilling to learn new tricks. The Cumbrian, 29, has his own areas of improvement he's focusing on.

"It's about cutting out just the little bits of rubbish, a lot of my errors come from trying too hard, it's not a lack of effort, just trying a bit too hard, fumbling at the play the ball and stuff like that.

"The game is changing, it's faster than it has been previously, it changes a lot of things and you've got to adapt to it. It's just about doing it over and over and becoming like a robot.

"It's an area for myself and I'm conscious of it."

Since his move to the club, Donaldson has earned plenty of admirers with his industry and willingness to do the unfashionable elements of the game.

However, where that has at times gone unappreciated in the past, he has been left content with the fact his value is acknowledged at Headingley.

"I've found at a lot of clubs I've been at, the coaches and fans want to see the fancy stuff and the diving tries. That's not me, I'm about doing the little things right, I think the way the team plays I can carry on doing that here.

"This has been a massive blessing, from the first day I felt like I was at home, I've felt valued. When Rich (Agar) took over he spoke about what I do for the team and it brought my confidence on a lot. It brings the best out of my game, I do well what I do for the team with hard work. Every team needs someone who just grafts away, who does the s*** stuff so to say. I think I bring that energy."

Fans can expect to see more of the same this year. Donaldson is looking to earn a new deal with his existing contract expiring at the end of the season.

"Of course it's in the back of my mind, I've a little baby due in two weeks time and I need to provide for him and my wife.

"I want to be playing well every week regardless but this is our livelihoods. You've got to provide as well as perform. I've got to be at my best every game to earn that contract. It's just trying to keep your focus on your game and not your future."
