James Cracknell and wife vowed to never divorce like most brain injury couples

James Cracknell and Beverley Turner once vowed that they'd never get divorced after learning that most couples in their position do.

Radio host and writer Beverley Turner, who has three children with the Olympic rower, nursed him back to health following his devastating brain injury in 2010 .

They've just announced that they are divorcing after 17 years of marriage.

But back in 2012, they said it would never happen.

The couple told The Daily Telegraph that a neuropsychologist warned them as they left the hospital that 75% of people with brain injuries divorce.

Beverley said: "We’ll do everything not to become part of that number. We’re still toughing it out."

And James jokingly added: "We’re not allowed to divorce."

The couple released a joint statement confirming the news that their marriage had come to an end on Friday evening.

They explained they decided to separate last year and their children Croyde, 14, Kiki, 10, and Trixie, eight, remain their priority.

James, 46, moved out of the London home he shared with Beverley, 45, eight months ago and has been living Cambridge University as a mature student for his MPhil in Human Evolution.

"We can confirm that sadly we separated last year," the statement read.

"Together, we remain committed to our amazing children, they are our absolute priority and wish people to be kind and mindful of this."

The couple faced pressure in their marriage following James' 2010 horror crash.
