James Corden will be hosting the Tony awards, the ceremony which honours the best Broadway shows of the year.
The host of CBS’s The Late Late Show will make his debut as MC on 12 June at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.
The British comedian and actor has performed on Broadway twice and won a Tony in 2012 as best leading actor in a play for One Man, Two Guvnors.
He first performed on Broadway in 2006 in Alan Bennett’s play The History Boys.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Tony awards,” said Corden in a statement. “Both times I’ve worked on Broadway have been amongst the happiest times of my professional life. I consider it a huge honor to be asked to host such an incredible night. It’s gonna be fun, I can’t wait to dust off my tap shoes!”
Corden has hosted The Late Late Show for almost a year and has boosted audience figures by a third among 18-49-year-olds, though in the overall ratings stakes he trails far behind NBC’s Jimmy Fallon, the current champion.
However, his Carpool Karaoke slot has been a viral hit. His episode starring Adele has been viewed 62m times. The next instalment, on Tuesday night, will see him sing with Chris Martin ahead of Coldplay’s performance as the half-time entertainment at the Super Bowl on Sunday.
