James Corden shares Gavin and Stacey return conditions as The Late Late Show ends and he heads back to the UK

James Corden has revealed the one thing that'll see the return of Gavin & Stacey as he appeared on Lorraine Kelly's morning show on Thursday, April 27, ahead of the final episode of The Late Late Show airing before his imminent return to the UK.

The 44-year-old announced he was stepping down from his American chat show in April 2022, telling viewers: "When I started this journey, it was always going to be just that. It was going to be a journey—an adventure. I never saw it as my final destination, you know? And I never want this show to overstay its welcome in any way. I always want to love making it. And I really think in a year from now that will be a good time to move on and see what else might be out there."

He also explained, in his interview on Lorraine, how this move back to Britain has been inspired by James' want for his three children - Carey, Charlotte and Max - who he shares with his wife Julia Carey, to have a solid relationship with their grandparents, who live in the UK.

He said: "It's not even a professional decision, really. It's just a decision where we fundamentally want our kids to experience what it feels like to grow up in Britain. There's people at home who are getting older and we want them to have a relationship with their grandkids. We want our kids to have a relationship with their grandparents."

When the anticipated question came of whether we are going to finally get a Gavin & Stacey Christmas special upon his return, confirming what we all want to know - does Smithy say yes to Nessa's proposal - James remained rather coy about it and said: "Gavin & Stacey... Look, Ruth's one of my best friends, I'm going to see her. I don't know if we'll talk about it. I saw her at Christmas and we didn't talk even really mention it, if I'm honest. It didn't even come up. We were talking about so much other stuff."

He revealed that, during the ad break of his American show, he always gets one question or another on Gavin & Stacey and whether it'll make a comeback and "what happens to Smithy and Nessa? Are we going to find out?"

He concluded: "All I know is: We won't do it unless we think we can do something that won't let people down. We'll see what happens."

Earlier in the week, fans of James were witness to a clip from his last The Late Late Show in which viewers saw Adele waking the actor and writer up a crash of symbols, announcing she was taking him on his last ever Carpool Karaoke - which had both of them in floods of tears. The Last Late Late Show with James Corden will air in the UK on Sky Showcase on Friday, April 28 at 10:15pm.
